Tile Murals: The Technology
How We Make the Murals
The murals are created with a technology called Dye Sublimation. Dye sublimation is a process when under extreme heat and pressure, special inks turn into a gas and chemically bond to the coating of the tiles - thus dying the tile. This is not a decal on the tile, the tiles are not painted -they are dyed. The process is photographic and produces stunning photographic images. Since the actual tile is dyed, there is nothing to rub off or peel off.

Tile Descriptions
Specially coated tiles are used in the process to make the tile murals so that the chemical dying can occur. We can NOT use tiles that you supply. The tiles that we use start out as standard sized tiles that you can purchase at your tile store...they then go through a coating process in a coating plant and then are available for use. We offer the following types of tile:
Glass Tile
Available in 6" x 6" and 12" x 12"
The image is printed on the bottom of the tile. The top of the tile has a rough skid resistant surface. Suitable for floors, pools, kitchens, bathrooms, or anywhere. The tiles are ANSI rated for commercial and residential floors. Since the image is on the bottom of the tile, this is the most durable tile offered.
Gloss Tile
Available in 4.25” x 4.25”, 6” x 6”, 8" x 8", and 12" x 12"
These tiles have a high gloss finish. They are the least scratch resistant of all the tiles and the gloss surface does, in fact, scratch easily. These tiles are great for murals that are hung for artwork. These tiles are not suitable for murals anywhere that will have washing – as the scratches will show up in the high gloss of the tile.
Matte Tile
Available in 4.25” x 4.25”, 6” x 6”, 8" x 8", and 12" x 12"
These tiles have a matte surface that is scratch and moisture resistant and are suitable for use in moist interior/damp areas. These tiles can scratch under extreme pressure. These tiles are great for tile murals behind a kitchen backsplash, as a shower surround or wall mural. These tiles can NOT be submerged under water.
Porcelain Tile
Available in 6" x 6"
These tiles are made of porcelain and can be used underwater or in a location where freezing is possible. These tiles are available by special order only.
Tumbled Tiles
Available in 4" x 4" and 6” x 6”
These tiles have a lacquered surface and are very scratch resistant. They look like tumbled stone with a matte finish. They can be used as a kitchen backsplash, counter top, or table top. The tumbled tiles are the ONLY tile that needs to be sealed if used in a "dirty" environment such as a kitchen backsplash. These tiles are much thicker than a standard ceramic tile.
If you would like to see a sample of our tiles, you can order samples from our sample order form. The samples have a required deposit which is refunded (less shipping) when the tiles are returned in their original condition.

* The tile sizes are equivalent to a regular tile you would get in a tile store. The 4” tiles are really 4.25” just like the tiles in a regular tile store (except the tumbled tiles, which are 4"). The gloss and matte tiles have spacers for 4 x 4 and 6 x 6 sizes.
UV Resistance / Outdoor Use
While the tiles and ink have a UV resistant coating, they are not appropriate for outside use. Some people have put the tiles vertically in a mural in shaded areas outside and have reported great results. The murals can be coated with a UV coating for longer outdoor life. In areas where a freeze is possible, only the porcelain tiles can be used as they absorb the least amount of humidity/water and have the least possibility of cracking during a thaw/freeze situation.
Indoor Use
For indoor use, the tiles, like your hardwood floors, carpets, curtains, upholstery, etc. will fade over time. The amount of time will depend on many factors including how much direct sunlight is on the tiles on a day to day basis – this is the same as your floors, carpets, curtains, etc.
Hot Plates
None of the tiles are appropriate to use as hot plates (trivets).
Sample Tiles
Sample tiles can be ordered. The sample tiles are pre-printed with a collage of images on them. Each sample tile requires a $10 deposit. Once we receive the tiles back in their original condition, we will either refund your deposit or credit it to your mural order (less shipping fees).
